Marian Evangelization Center of Guadalupe

Centre Marial de Guadalupe - Plaza Mariana

Our Lady of Guadalupe or the Virgin of Guadalupe is the name given to the Virgin Mary, patroness of Mexico City since 1737, patroness of Mexico since 1895, Queen of Mexico and Empress of the Americas since 2000 (John Paul II), patroness of Latin America, patroness of the city of Ponce in Porto Rico, and patroness of students in Peru since 1951 (Pius XII). A great number of families have a special devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Star of the first and the new evangelization of America. To her I entrust the pilgrim Church in Mexico and the American continent, and I fervently ask her to guide her children, so that they will enter the third millennium with faith and hope.

The Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City is one of the largest religious shrines in the world. The Shrine is located on the Plaza Mariana, which was built by the initiative of a generous donor. A beautiful area was given to the Church, where the Foundation for Evangelization through the Media (FEM) and Aleteia were commissioned by the Archdiocese of Mexico City and the Basilica of Guadalupe to conceptualize and build a 5,000 m2 Marian Evangelization Center (CME)—the archdiocese will retain ownership of the walls.

The tragedy of secularization that society is currently experiencing has weakened the religious beliefs of millions of Mexicans. Therefore, since the root cause seems to be the lack of formation, the construction of the CME on the Plaza Mariana will help provide religious instruction to 2 million Mexicans a year, with an explicit and impactful catechesis that will deepen the knowledge of Catholic doctrine and revive the faith of individuals.

The goal of the FEM Aleteia Mexico is to be an effective arm of the Catholic Church in Mexico for the new tasks of evangelization. It is offering practical tools to capture the interest of the faithful and unbelievers alike. Above all, it offers educational elements to help each one of us live virtuous lives and become better people, with a stronger faith.

The Marian Evangelization Center on the Plaza Mariana at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe is the most ambitious multimedia project carried out by the Foundation for Evangelization through the Media so far. It will open its doors to the 20 million pilgrims who visit the Basilica of Guadalupe each year. The CME of Guadalupe is expected to welcome at least 500,000 visitors a year. We are entrusting this project to the maternal intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Most Holy Virgin! Like Blessed Juan Diego, may we bring your image with us impressed on our journey of life and proclaim the Good News of Christ to all peoples.
